DEFINE THE SCOPE AROUND THE DOCUMENT PURPOSE

Certified driving licence translation

For overseas driving, rental, licence conversion or translation of a foreign licence into Chinese, first identify the destination and recipient requirements. We assess the licence translation, review and agreed statements or stamps, with attention to names, dates, validity, categories, restrictions and annexes. A translation does not grant driving entitlement.

Start with the purpose and scope

Travel and vehicle rental

Identify the country, state or province, rental brand and branch, travel date and licence status. Check language, format, provider and original-document requirements first.

Licence conversion and records review

Share the licensing authority checklist, including any first-issue date, driving-history evidence or approved translator requirement, before confirming the service.

Foreign licences translated into Chinese

Identify the city and recipient and provide both sides and all annexes. Check the card, dates, category codes and restrictions separately; agree original-document checks with the recipient.

Review focused on the document details

Names and identifying fields

Check names, identifiers, issuer and address against the source and use confirmed spelling across related files. Raise missing, unclear or conflicting details for confirmation.

Dates and validity

Distinguish first issue, card issue, expiry and indefinite validity, preserving limitations. Translation does not extend an expired licence; driving-history evidence and missing details are handled separately.

Categories and restrictions

Retain category codes, annex notes and restrictions such as corrective lenses. Do not relabel them as local categories; local rules and the recipient govern equivalence and driving permission.

Layout, statements and source correspondence

Map the translation to both sides and annexes and handle seals, signatures and notes clearly. Check named-translator or provider requirements first and list electronic, paper and supporting deliverables.

Agree the deliverables before work begins

Electronic translation

Agree PDF, Word, Excel or other formats, editability, page order and file naming. Confirm any page-by-page source correspondence before work starts.

Statements, signatures and stamps

If the recipient requires a translator statement, signature, contact details, stamp or a particular qualification, share the checklist first so the supporting set and responsible provider can be checked.

Paper copies and shipping

Agree copies, binding, source-reference pages, address and shipping milestones. Translation, supporting formalities and transit are planned separately.

Translation, notarisation, Apostille and consular legalisation are distinct stages. Check the recipient checklist to establish which stages and document combinations are needed for the intended submission.

A clear path from files to feedback

  1. Describe the files

Provide clear files or a redacted sample, with languages, purpose, volume and timing.

  2. Agree the scope

Confirm main text and annexes, review, formats, supporting work, price and delivery.

  3. Translate and review

Check fields, terminology, figures, dates and cross-document relationships.

  4. Deliver and follow up

Deliver against the list and consolidate feedback; assess new source versions or added files separately.

Questions before you commission the work

Is a certified licence translation an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

No. This service provides a translation of licence information with agreed statements or stamps. It does not issue an IDP or grant driving entitlement. Local rules, licence status, residence or visitor status and permitted categories govern driving. Carry the valid original licence as required.

Will one translation work in every country and with every rental company?

There is no universal acceptance promise. Language, translator qualifications, format and original-document requirements vary. A rental company’s document policy does not replace road-traffic rules. Share the specific destination and the authority’s or rental branch’s written instructions before commissioning.

What if an approved translator or named provider is required?

Before paying, share the required qualification, approved-provider list or official link so eligibility can be checked. A general translation stamp does not replace a specified qualification. For example, NZTA sets requirements for who may provide a licence translation; see the official link below. Do not order for a use whose provider conditions cannot be met.

What if names, validity or vehicle categories are unclear?

Names are checked against the licence and confirmed passport spelling; provide evidence of name changes where relevant. Expiry, first-issue dates, categories and restrictions are translated from the source. Local category equivalence and an expired licence’s validity are not created through translation. Queries are resolved before final delivery.

How do I choose electronic or paper delivery and plan timing?

Check whether the recipient accepts electronic files or requires signed or stamped paper, a source copy or postage. Translation, review, issue and shipping milestones are agreed after file assessment. Urgent requests depend on resources. A renewed licence, extra language or new destination calls for another version and requirements check.

Describe the documents and request a quote

Share the languages, volume, purpose and preferred timing to confirm the scope, price and delivery. Complete files can follow once the transfer method is agreed.
